Feast of Vintage Arnold in the Autumn
A
veritable feast of orchestral and brass band music by Sir Malcolm
Arnold has been announced as part of the London Philharmonic Orchestra's
2004/5 season at London's Royal Festival Hall in September.
• Opening
the proceedings will be the world premiere screening of Tony Palmer's
film "Toward the Unknown Region, Malcolm Arnold- A Story
of Survival" on Monday 20 September at 7.30pm and introduced
by Melvyn Bragg.

Later in the week a Malcolm Arnold "Study Day" will
be held in the Chelsfield Room during the morning and afternoon
of Friday 24 September - the schedule is as follows:

Introduction and discussion by Tony Meredith and Paul Harris on
Arnold in the context of English Music in the last half of the
20th century.

Free pre-concert event in the RFH Auditorium:

performance of Arnold’s "Sea Shanties" by members
of the LPO followed by a discussion with Paul Harris and Tony
Meredith

Then a real treat - an all-Arnold orchestral concert on the evening
of Friday 24th September with the following programme:
1. Flourish for a 21st Birthday
2. Overture:Beckus the Dandipratt
3. Suite:The Inn of the Sixth Happiness
4. Clarinet Concerto No.2
5. Philharmonic Concerto
6. Symphony No.6
The soloist in the Clarinet ConcertoNo.2 will be Julian Bliss
and the concert will be conducted by Vernon Handley. It will be
broadcast "live" on BBC Radio3 and the concert starts
at 7.30pm.
• Then
the following week a rare opportunity to hear Sir Malcolm's various
sets of Dances in their brass band arrangements at a concert on
Monday 27 September in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at 7.15pm - this
concert presented by the LPO and supported by the South Bank Centre
will feature six Arnold works for brass band as follows:
1. Four Scottish Dances
2. Siciliano from Suite No.1
3. Four Cornish Dances
4. Fanfare for Louis
5. Four English Dances Op.27
6. Fantasy
(plus pieces by William Walton, Elgar Howarth and Herbert Howells)
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band will be conducted by Elgar Howarth.

Finally! in addition to the above performances the LPO will also
open their FUNharmonic Family Concert on Sunday 7 November with
Arnold's "Grand Grand Overture" conducted by Alexander
Briger. This concert starts at 11.30am and will be presented by
Chris Jarvis.

Press** - the world premiere of a newly edited concert Suite from
Sir Malcolm's ballet "Electra" has been announced -
this performance will take place at the Royal Festival Hall, London
as part of a concert given by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted
by Barry Wordsworth on November 5th (with fireworks!). This concert
will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio3.
